- A new dimension in food production - Solar FoodsIn Lifestyles and the Environment·January 14, 2022"Solar Foods discovered Solein, a protein-rich food made from natural single-cell organisms. Solein combines the benefits, tastes and nutrients of both animal and plant proteins. We take our ingredients straight from the air by utilising renewable energy and the untapped microbiological diversity of planet Earth." Source:005
- Cities worldwide arent adapting to climate change quickly enoughIn Global Commons·December 8, 2021More than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and that share is growing. Rapid climate change could make many cities unlivable in the coming decades without major investments to adapt. - Excellence and trust in artificial intelligence (EU and AI)In General AI·February 2, 2022Trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) can bring many benefits, such as better healthcare, safer and cleaner transport, more efficient manufacturing, and cheaper and more sustainable energy. The EU’s approach to AI will give people the confidence to embrace these technologies while encouraging businesses to develop them. - The EU is being asked to pay for border fences to keep migrants outIn Geopolitical Reconfiguration·December 8, 2021"THE EUROPEAN UNION has a firm stance on paying for border walls: it won’t. Even after Europe’s migration crisis in 2015-16, when 1.4m people arrived, many fleeing Syria’s civil war, the European Commission sent Hungary away with a flea in its national ear when it asked for reimbursement for fencing off its border with Serbia, one of the main entry points." - World first study used AI tool to predict COVID patients’ oxygen needsIn The Future of Health·December 8, 2021"Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge along with 20 other hospitals from across the world and healthcare technology leader, NVIDIA, have used artificial intelligence (AI) to predict COVID-19 patients’ oxygen needs. The research published in Nature Medicine, used an algorithm to analyse chest x-rays and anonymised electronic health data from hospital patients with COVID-19 symptoms. Once the algorithm learned from the data, the analysis was used to build an AI tool called EXAM, which was found to predict patients’ oxygen needs within 24 hours of their arrival in the emergency department, with a sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of over 88%." - How period-friendly is our corporate culture? In The Future of Health·January 14, 2022A few days ago, the German climate activist, influencer and business owner Louisa Dellert, started a debate on Linkedin about female health - specifically destigmatizing menstruation. She addressed menstruation at the workplace and how periods are affecting the well-being as well as productivity of women at work. She mentions that a friend gets so-called "period leave". Companies like Nike have implemented the "period leave" since 2007. What are your thoughts on this Linkedin post and what do you think of standardizing "period leaves"? - Elon Musk's Brain Chip Company Is Preparing to Launch Human TrialsIn Transhumanist Revolutions·February 16, 2022"Elon Musk's brain chip company Neuralink appears to be gearing up to launch its first-ever human trials, with the firm now looking to recruit a director to run the tests. According to The Guardian, the entrepreneur, who owns a variety of science-based start-ups, is preparing to take Neuralink's brain chip research to the next stage by hiring a mission-driven Clinical Trial Director to begin human testing. The company is moving toward potentially finding a way to use the technology to treat people with brain and spinal injuries." Source: https://bit.ly/3GYMhSp #Transhumanism #BrainChip #ElonMusk007
- How misunderstandings about forecasting can alter the discourseIn Climate & Geoengineering·August 25, 2022An important part of probabilistic forecasting is that it is... probabilistic. Newsweek reports that in Hungary, top weather forecasters were fired after forecasting storm that missed Budapest Hungary Fires Top Weather Officials Over Wrong Forecast (newsweek.com) - an interesting sequel to the story of Italian seismologists who were jailed for failing to predict a deadly earthquake in L' Aquila in 2009 (who were subsequently cleared by a court of appeal in 2014 - Italian seismologists cleared of manslaughter | Nature). Misunderstandings about science, certainty and risk of "natural catastrophes" (in "" because catastrophes predicted can be mitigated and sometimes avoided altogether) can radically alter the discourse around climate change - a quality that has been massively exploited. - New material makes batteries charge fasterIn Sandbox·December 8, 2021"By using a fully new material, nickel niobate, for the anode of lithium-ion batteries, the charging speed can be improved by ten times, according to researchers of the University of Twente (MESA+ Institute). This is possible without the risk of damaging the anode material, causing battery breakdown or reducing its lifetime. An additional advantage is that the manufacturing process is not complicated. The researchers published their first results using batteries with the new anode in the Advanced Energy Materials journal, writes the University of Twente in a press release." - Eco Oceanic Energy SystemsIn Climate & Geoengineering·September 5, 2022"The Waveline Magnet Concept Design has been designed by Sea Wave Energy Limited (SWEL) as an eco energy solution for harnessing the power of the ocean. The system maintains an elongated mat design that would float freely in the ocean and convert the wave energy into electricity. This energy would be captured in the spine-like central unit where it could be stored for use. The Waveline Magnet Concept Design wouldn't cause any disruption to the surface of the water and would capture more energy when the waves get rougher. The system would act as a complementary addition to the existing renewable energy technologies on the market and could produce up to 100MW of energy per unit." - The wurst is over: why Germany now loves to go vegetarianIn Lifestyles and the Environment·December 7, 2021"Inside a shopping mall in south Berlin, two colleagues are chomping on hamburgers and fries, cheese sauce running down their fingers as they try to beat the lunchtime clock. Feelings of guilt are in short supply this Friday afternoon: the burger joint where the two women have grabbed a bite is called Vincent Vegan, and the patty inside the brioche bun is made of wheat, barley, and soya." - The self-driving trolley problem: how will future AI systems make the most ethical choices for all of us?In General AI·December 8, 2021"Artificial intelligence (AI) is already making decisions in the fields of business, health care and manufacturing. But AI algorithms generally still get help from people applying checks and making the final call. What would happen if AI systems had to make independent decisions, and ones that could mean life or death for humans?"
