- A different view: China’s approval of gene-edited crops energizes researchersIn The Future of Health·February 14, 2022Researchers in China are excited by their government’s approval of gene-edited crops, which they say clears the way for the plants’ use in agriculture and should boost research into varieties that are tastier, pest-resistant and better adapted to a warming world. Since China’s agriculture ministry released preliminary guidelines on 24 January, researchers have been hurrying to submit applications for the use of their gene-edited crops. - “Molecular Coffee”In Lifestyles and the EnvironmentJanuary 26, 2022Well, this is the future. There will be more .....less, but even more " .......". These dots indicate a new definition of something totally new or something that existed and transformed/changed into something different. What I am saying is that we need to work with " definitions " in order to understand and embrace all these new inventions, subjects, concepts, values, products, events, life style..... you name it. I would suggest we play a little game : 1. think about something that exists today, but was not in our life 20 years ago.... 2. think about something that existed 20 years ago, but does not exist anymore... 3. think about something that exist today, but will not exist in 20 years... It is always fun to find out about what has disappeared in our lives and how we easily forgot about it :) I would like to invite all members to play together and share their lists. If , ofcourse, they feel like it. Many thanks in advance...10
- Introduce yourselfIn WelcomeFebruary 2, 2022@kazim sari sorry for delayed reply. Whole Surplus has had significant impact as I understand it...founded in 2015 by Olcay Silahli & Arda Eren their goal is creating tech-based solutions to reduce food waste in the supply chain and feed the hungry by 50% in 2030. I so enjoyed almost being the only American in an all-Turkish class w/ my primary Whole Surplus connection being: Serhat Bilge. I also enjoyed learning about the work that Kurtuluş Kantar https://www.theimagefindertool.com & Hanzade Acar https://onda.com.tr are doing. Truly transformative, powerful, and impactful concepts emerging in Turkey that all the world gets to take notice of.1

- The Rise of A.I. Fighter PilotsIn General AIJanuary 20, 2022Hi Kazim, one of my favourites - and near my views is Daniel Dennett: Why robots won't rule the world - Viewsnight - YouTube. In short the people who say that the technology could be trusted should be somehow accountable for what the technology causes. But the key question is trusted to do what?1
- The Rise of A.I. Fighter PilotsIn General AIJanuary 24, 2022I am tempted to read Stanislaw Lem and Isaac Asimov on the Law of Robotics again: https://www.hyperkommunikation.ch/literatur/asimov_robot.htm Sorry could only find a German reference.10
- What if the models of climate change turn out to be wrong? What if we could become less vulnerable to the threats of climate change? In Climate & GeoengineeringJuly 7, 2022All models are approximations and therefore partly wrong. When it comes to climate change models, there seems to be a tendency to underestimate the speed of change and the severity of symptoms and effects. For example see https://twitter.com/sylvaindarwish/status/1537181101357256704?s=27&t=bFYvkXQBwDZOHykIkpg25Q. Of course human ingenuity, inventiveness and technical prowess can help us become less vulnerable to climate change, but can we do so without making climate change worse? Are there solutions that do not increase emissions of greenhouse gases, and do not involve serious risks for health, society and the environment? In the absence of such options, it would seem that the battle against climate change is a race against the speed of change, in the same way that we engage in races against the rate of mutation in flu and corona viruses. This is one more reason why many hope that we can transfer lessons from pandemic management to addressing climate change: see The scientific, technological and societal conditions for the end of the COVID-19 crisis - Publications Office of the EU (europa.eu)10

- More short-sighted peopleIn The Future of HealthFebruary 2, 2022I love the pun!10
- More short-sighted peopleIn The Future of HealthFebruary 2, 2022I remember one of my former roommates telling me that his eyesight not extremely bad after spending a lot of hours in front of the laptop screen has he was studying so much. I definitely think that the consequences of corona have encouraged lack of time outside and increased time in front of screens.1
