The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) is the national public agency supporting research in science, technology and innovation in all areas of knowledge. It is a special regime public institute under the supervision and oversight of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation.
The vision of FCT is to:
• establish Portugal as a global reference in science, technology and innovation.
• ensure that knowledge generated by scientific research is used fully for economic growth and the well-being of all citizens.
FCT’s mission is to continuously promote the advancement of knowledge in science and technology in Portugal, attain the highest international standards in quality and competitiveness, in all scientific and technological domains, and encourage its dissemination and contribution to society and to economic growth.
The need to anticipate future crises, megatrends and emerging phenomena, as well as their impact on policies - coupled with the need to strengthen resilience - has given increased relevance to Strategic Foresight in R&D and Innovation within the framework of European policies. This relevance has increased in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and, more recently, with the war in Ukraine.
